Abridged Measure for Measure/#11/Stand-in/Act 3, Scene 1.2

The Duke-Friar says to Isabella “I would by and by have some speech with you.” She says she’ll wait for him. He takes Claudio aside and says “Son, I have overheard what hath passed between you and your sister. Angelo had never the purpose to corrupt her. Therefor prepare yourself to death. Tomorrow you must die.” Claudio replies “Let me ask my sister pardon. I am so out of love with life that I will sue to be rid of it.” The Duke-Friar tells him to “Hold you there.” He says “Provost, a word with you.” He asks the Provost to exit and take Claudio with him. To Isabella, the Duke-Friar says “How will you do to content this deputy and to save your brother?” She says “I had rather my brother die by the law than my son should be unlawfully born.” He says “Fasten your ear to my advisings. To the love I have in doing good, a remedy presents itself.” She says “Let me hear you speak farther.” He tells her the story of Angelo and Mariana, his fiancée who lost her brother and her dowry on a ship that was lost at sea. Angelo walked away from her when he learned of her lost dowry. Isabella asks “Can this be so? Did Angelo so leave her?” The Duke-Friar says “Left her in her tears and dried not one of them with his comfort. You may easily heal this rupture.” She says “Show me how.” He tells her that she should set up a time to meet with Angelo, and that “your stay with him may not be long; that the time may have all shadow and silence in it; and the place be convenient. This wronged maid shall fulfill your appointment. By this, your brother saved, your honor untainted, the poor Mariana advantaged, and the corrupt deputy weighted. What think you of it?” She says “The image of it gives me content already.” He says “It lies much in your holding up. Haste you speedily to Angelo. If for this night he entreat you to his bed, give him promise of satisfaction.” He tells her that he will let the “dejected Mariana” know of the plan. She exits.
